The calm broke. Two weeks ago the story was cooling inflation and cheaper oil, and now it is a Middle East supply shock landing at the same time as a fresh round of Trump tariffs, with the dollar climbing against every major currency as a result. Brent crude briefly punched above 100 dollars a barrel for the first time in months, and the odds of a Fed rate hike that sat near one in ten in mid-July have climbed to roughly one in three. Into that backdrop lands the busiest week of the quarter. Three central banks decide inside 48 hours, with the Federal Reserve on Wednesday, the Bank of England on Thursday and the Bank of Japan on Friday, and all three face the same question of whether an oil-driven price spike passes through or sticks. Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta all report within 24 hours of each other in the middle of it, worth more than eleven trillion dollars between them.

Last Week, Graded

UK Inflation, June CPI: Cooler British prices rose 2.6 percent over the year, down from 2.8 percent and just under the 2.7 percent expected, the softest reading since March 2025 as cheaper motor fuel and calmer transport costs did the heavy lifting, which keeps the Bank of England comfortably on its wait-and-see path.

ECB Rate Decision, July: Hold, as expected The European Central Bank left its deposit rate at 2.25 percent in a unanimous vote, and President Lagarde pointed to September as the live meeting while the bank waits to see how the oil spike from the Iran conflict feeds into euro-area inflation.

Tesla, Q2: Revenue Beat, Profit Miss Tesla posted record revenue of 28.24 billion dollars, up 26 percent and ahead of the 25.71 billion expected, but adjusted earnings of 33 cents a share badly missed the 51 cents forecast as operating income collapsed 57 percent and margins thinned to 1.4 percent, and the stock fell about 5.6 percent after hours and more than 7 percent the next day.

Alphabet, Q2: Beat, Then Sold Off Google’s parent grew revenue 24 percent to 119.8 billion dollars with cloud sales up a stunning 82 percent, yet shares still slid about 3.65 percent after the company lifted its 2026 capital-spending plan to as much as 205 billion dollars, a sign investors are starting to flinch at the size of the AI build-out bill.

The setup: Britain’s inflation cooled and Europe held steady, but both readings were taken before oil went vertical, so this week asks all three central banks whether the spike changes anything.
